Virginia "Sissy" C. Thomas

July 28, 1938 — April 10, 2017

Virginia “Sissy” Thomas, 78 of Secor, IL formerly of Streator, IL passed away Monday, April 10, 2017 at 4:46 PM at the home of her daughter after a short illness while under hospice care.

Visitation will be Saturday, April 15, 2017 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Winterrowd-Hagi Funeral Home with Services starting at 3:00 PM. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Pontiac at a later date.

The former Virginia Corrine Copeland was born July 28, 1938 in Streator IL to W. Wilson “Doc” and Florence (Dodge) Copeland.

She is survived by her children; a daughter; Darlene Morris of El Paso, IL and two sons; Robert (Alyshia) Thomas of Atlanta, IL and John (Tina) Thomas of Bloomington IL. She is also survived by five grandchildren; Taylor, Clayton and Corinna Thomas of Bloomington, IL and Hannah and Jacob Thomas of Atlanta, IL. She is also survived by a nephew, William (Julie) Copeland and a niece, Denise (Robert) Lepore, of Streator; whom she cherished as her own. As well as several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Wilson “Docie” Copeland, her ex-husband, John Robert “Bob” Thomas, whom she cared for until his death in 2008, and her son in law Greg Morris.

She leaves behind her precious companions, her dog Molly and her cat Miss Kitty.

She worked all her life in Streator, in food service, working at several cafés and restaurants. However, at age 58 she achieved her dream of returning to school to became a Certified Nursing Assistant and worked at Heritage Health in Streator until her retirement.

She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and was ecstatic when they finally won the World Series in 2016; she also loved the Chicago Bears and enjoyed listening to Traditional Country Music. Most of all she loved being a Mom and cherished that time she spent with her children and extended family.  She was known by many as Sissy or Saint Virginia and enjoyed socializing with everyone she met. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Secor Fire Protection District or the El Paso Food Pantry.
