Reuben “Mark” Arthur Brown, 90 of San Francisco, CA and formerly of Streator passed away Sunday (April 27, 2025) in California.
Private family services will be held with burial in Phillips Cemetery.
Reuben was born on August 18, 1934, in Manville to Reuben M. and Wanda M. (Hillenberg) Brown.
Surviving are nieces and nephews, Sharon Shuett, Michael (Karan) Brown Sr., William (Trisha) Brown, Lisa (Bradley “Bruno” Burns) Brown, Kenneth Brown Jr., Angie (Wiley) Miller, John (Melissa) Brown, Dale Brown and Christie (Dennis) Loring, Daniel Webster and several great nieces and nephews and several great great nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Marlin and Kenneth Brown, nieces, Tammy Brown and Vicki (Brown) Webster and nephew Gary Raridon.
Reuben attended Streator grade schools and graduated from Streator High School in 1952. He served in the US Army. Reuben was inducted into the North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance (NAGAAA) hall of fame for being a pioneering gay sports leader in San Francisco and playing a key role in the creation of the world’s first Gay (Olympic-style) Games. He published a book titles Gay Games I: The True Story, The Forgotten Man.
Winterrowd Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
