Herman "Bones" E. Bruns

January 22, 1940 — October 27, 2022

Herman “Bones” Earl Bruns, 82 of Streator passed away Thursday (October 27, 2022) in Rochester, MN. He was born on January 22, 1940, in Pana, IL to John and Teresa (Galvin) Bruns. He married Verna Hopwood on August 18, 1956. They had three children and lived in Streator since1967.

Bones Bruns is survived by: Verna, his wife of 66 years; son Dennis Bruns; daughters Donna (Ralph) Feken and Dana (Tim) Martin; grandchildren Cari (Rory) Bedeker, Brett (Megan W.) Martin, Kati (Eric) Vickers, Brooks (Mollie) Martin and Brennon Martin; great-grandchildren Brynlee Bedeker, Wyatt and Harper Martin, and Martin and Marshall Vickers; special nephews Robbie Kates, and Kyle, Seth and Tyler Yount. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Mary Sanders, Lester Kates, George Bruns, John Bruns and Marguaret Sietz.

He started working at the age of twelve setting bowling pins after school and then managed a milk route while starting a family. He later became a union carpenter, which lead to moving north, and retired from Local 916. He was a member of Ancona Church of Christ, Masonic Lodge and YMCA. He volunteered a lot of his time over the years, including the Streatorland Food Pantry, the Masonic Temple, and helping countless friends. Herman served as a LaSalle County Board member and was always a proud member of the Democratic Party. For those wondering, he did not submit an absentee ballot!

Bones spent most of his retirement with his kids, grandkids and great grandkids at their many sporting events and activities, or just having an ice cream cone and telling a story on the couch. He was a unique individual who would talk with anyone and would talk to anyone for as long as they would listen.

Private family services will be held at the Winterrowd Funeral Home with burial in Riverview Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons Brett, Brooks and Brennon Martin, and nephews Kyle, Seth and Tyler Yount. Memorials may be made in his name to the Ronald McDonald House, Peoria or to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
